Shrewsbury Abbey was initially a humble wooden Saxon church. It went on to become one of the most impressive monastic buildings in the country founded in 1083 by the Norman Roger de Montgomery and a favourite destination for pilgrims.

Shrewsbury castle is a Norman red sandstone construction built by Roger de Montgomery in 1070 on the site of an original Anglo-Saxon fortification. It houses the Shropshire Regimental Museum with collections of pictures, weapons, uniforms and other memorabilia from the 1700's.

These impressive ruins have the Roman name "Viroconium" and are remains of the fourth largest Roman city in Britain. Its most impressive features are the 2nd-century municipal baths, and the remains of a huge dividing wall. There is a site museum and audio tour.

Acton Burnell Castle

The castle was a grand fortified manor house built in the 13th century by Robert Burnell, Chancellor of England and close friend of King Edward the First. The King was a regular visitor and it is said that he convened one of the first English Parliaments here in 1263.

Church of St.Mary The Virgin

A large medieval church originally Saxon, and was rebuilt in the 1170s. It is famous for its superb stained glass windows (including its stunning Jesse window) dating from various periods in its history, with fine arcades and richly carved nave roof.

St Chad's Church is a magnificent Georgian church overlooking The Quarry, build in 1792. View the central hall, with a sweeping double staircase to the gallery, decoration on the ceiling of the nave, delicate banisters and slender pillars supporting the gallery.

St. Mary Magdalene's Church (Battlefield)

St. Mary Magdalene's or Battlefield Church as it was known was built in 1406, just 3 years after the battle of Shrewsbury by Henry IV for the souls of those killed in the battle. Together with the earthworks and ponds to the south the Church is a scheduled monument.
