Rouen Old Town

rouen_old_town.jpgSteeped in history, Rouen Old Town is reputed to have been built by the Viking Rollo in 911. A maze of cobbled streets lined with wooden buildings that lurch against each other for support, it is here that you will find antique emporiums, art galleries and hidden curio shops.

Towering above the medieval streets is the 13th century Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen immortalised by Claude Monet. The best route from the cathedral is by way of the ‘road of the big clock’ or Rue de Gros Horloge, where you cannot miss the famous one-handed clock first installed in the 16th century. Open to visitors, it is possible to climb to the top for breathtaking views across the city.

rouen_clock.jpgContinue along this bustling street and into the Place de Vieux Marché where a central cross marks the place where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Not to be missed is the Tour Jeanne d'Arc, originally part of a 13th century castle, local legend suggests that Joan of Arc was imprisoned in the castle and tortured in the tower. The tower is now home to a small Joan of Arc collection.

Often referred to as the ‘City of a Hundred Spires’, the best way to explore the Old Town is on foot. Allow yourself to be tempted by hidden alleyways, medieval archways and winding streets, it’s the only way to get a real flavour of Old Rouen.
