Picturesque Brougham Castle was begun in the early 13th century by Robert de Vieuxpont, near the site of a Roman fort guarding the crossing of the River Eamont. His great keep largely survives, reinforced by an impressive double gatehouse and other 14th-century additions. Today, the site features an introductory exhibition, including carved stones from the nearby Roman fort.

Brougham Hall stands on a site which has been a fortified home since at least 1307. It reached it’s zenith in Victorian Times, when it became known as the Windsor of the North, and the home of the Lord Chancellor of England. In 1934 however, the hall fell on hard times but was rescued from dereliction in 1985. In the last decade, and for many years to come, Brougham has been and will be the subject of the largest country house restoration project in England.
