Normandy Shopping

normandy_benedictine.jpgThere is plenty of opportunity to bring home something special as a reminder of visiting Normandy.  Many of the small towns and villages have curio shops, small emporiums harbouring treasures old and new; the Old Town in Rouen is particularly fruitful if you enjoy antiques and souvenirs.

Look  out for some unusual liqueurs on sale at some of the Abbeys in Normandy.  The Palais Bénédictine near Fecamp produces a very smooth brew that has mellowed and aged in ancient casks in the Palace basement.  For something a little lighter, head for Calvados to taste some excellent cider. If you are near Le Havre, don’t miss the Cidrerie du Duché de Longueville at Annevillesur-Scie where they produce De Cru cider, using just one variety of apple.

normandy_markets.jpgFrom flea markets to fresh produce sales, almost every town and village has something going on at least once a week.  Look out for the traditional market in Cambremer held every Sunday morning in July & August.  Local people dressed in peasant costumes encourage everyone to join in the folk dancing and music-making.

Another great place for a Sunday morning visit is the Grande Rue in Dieppe. Lined with some 200 shops it becomes a massive open-air emporium as locals set up stalls to sell their produce - organic fruit and vegetables, saucisses, and jams and fishermen sell their morning-fresh catches.

normandy_shopping.jpgThe urban city of Caen boasts a good range of shops but if you are looking for something extra-special,  try the boutiques in Deauville and Trouville.  Vuitton, Yves Saint-Laurent and Cartier are all represented in these chic seaside resorts.
