Marais OverviewThis fascinating part of Paris is where you will find the infamous Bastille, the National Opera House and the house of Victor Hugo. Once a little run-down, sensitive resoration has inspired elegant cafes and smart boutiques to move in. New galleries are opening all the time to add to the Musee Picasso and Musee Carnavalet which charts the vast history of Paris.

  • Colonne de Juillet - the old location of the Bastille, the site of the prison which was stormed by the Mob in 1789
  • Hôtel de Rohan - built for the son of Prince and Princess de Soubise, the mansion now houses the Historical Museum of France
  • Maison de Victor Hugo - the apartment where Victor Hugo lived and wrote some of his best known works - now a museum
  • Musée Cognacq-Jay - 18th century paintings and objects d'art bequeathed by Ernest Cognacq and his wife
  • Musée National Picasso - a collection of several thousand works of Pablo Picasso, displaying paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints
  • Opera National de Paris Bastille - a controversial building of modern curved glass and seats 2,700 people
