The Beatles

Beatles at the CavernIt all started at The Cavern.  Four guys with a passion for change, belting out music the way they liked it; loud, driving beat and lyrics the teens of the 60’s could relate to.

Plucked from the safety of their subterranean club, hair styled into a distinctive bob and clad in some very dodgy suits they took London by storm and Beatlemania was well on its way.  Their meteoric rise from obscurity to appearing before the Queen at the Royal Variety Show took little over a year.  The fab four conquered Europe, shook the dominant American music scene to its very roots and changed perceptions of youth for ever.

beatles-london.jpgAs film followed album and success followed success they cast off their neat-and tidy, packaged image; out went the suits and the carefully coiffed hair – they thrived on challenging the establishment, they needed change and more change.  Beatles fans were thrust into the surreal multi-coloured, multi-layered world of Sgt. Pepper and Yellow Submarines!

Sgt PepperIn a little over a decade the names John, George, Paul and Ringo where known the world over;  their music informed almost every other band on the streets ... and they fled.  Time spent with the Maharishi in the foothills of the Himalayas brought yet another change.  No longer content always to work together, the resulting album revealed intensely personal tracks that reflected the differences that were beginning to manifest themselves.

The BeatlesWhen the split finally came they had all moved on musically, personally and spiritually.  The strength and belief that had brought them together in the dreary days of the 1950s and held them together through the hysteria of the 1960’s started to pull them apart.  It wasn’t a pretty break-up but it could have been worse.  Their story is one that no one could have invented; their success was due as much to the sluggish state of post-war society as their undoubted talent but their legacy will outlive us all.
