Le Mont-St-Michel Village
The well-preserved medieval village is nestled at the bottom of the Mont-St-Michel geological mount and has become a popular and famous holiday destination in its own right. Home to houses, shops, workshops and a church, the Romanesque architecture mixes perfectly with the style of the Abbey and landscape of the island.
The village grew up at the same time as the famous abbey during the Middle Ages and has supported many functions of the development of the abbey. The village flourished at its location on the south-east side of the rock, surrounded by fortified walls dating for the most part from the 'Hundred Years war'. The village has always had a commercial emphasis, from the medieval times of the past to the present day, with its individual tourist shops, tiny cafes and listed hotels, all oozing with character and history.
