Paris Latin Quarter OverviewFamed for it's Bohemian atmosphere, narrow cobbled streets and student cafes, The Latin Quarter is bounded to the west by the Boulevard Saint Michel and to the north by the River Seine. Find inexpensive ethnic shops, lots of bookshops including Shakespeare and Company and the Rue Mouffetard Street Market, one of the oldest in Paris. Enjoy a great atmosphere in the Latin Quarter.


Latin Quarter Highlights

  • Boulevard Saint-Michel - crammed with bistros, cafes and great little independent shops
  • Chapelle de la Sorbonne - considered a masterpiece of French classical art, a very large building, topped by a cupola
  • Collège de France - created in 1530 at the request of King Francis I of France and was established as an alternative to the Sorbonne
  • Crypte Archéologique - the remnants of ancient walls, foundations, and cities that pre-date the Notre Dame Cathedral by several hundred years
  • Fontaine de Médicis - built in 1624 for Marie de Médicis by an unknown architect, this vigorous Baroque fountain stands at the end of a long pool
  • Jardin du Luxembourg - large park dating back to 1612, the centre of the park features a large pond and a puppet theatre
  • Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle - a fantastic collection of exhibits relating to the natural world
