Lakeland Poets in The Lake District
Discover the land that inspired the great works of The Lakeland Poets - William Wordsworth, John Ruskin, Robert Southey and Samual Taylor Coleridge. Also other poets, not usually associated with The Lake District, have been inspired as they traveled through the area, such as John Keats and Matthew Arnold.
Dove Cottage at Grasmere, a 17th Century cottage, was the home of Wordsworth from 1799 to 1808 and where he wrote much of his poetry. Also worth a visit is the seven room regency style Wordsworth House at Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth. Here you will find hands-on activities and costumed living history as you tour the property.
The Ruskin Museum at Coniston has more than just a display of Ruskins work; it also contains exhibits of lace, slate and farming as well as a lot of material relating to the Campbell family. Although Ruskin is better known for his literary work other than poetry it is said he drew inspiration from the natural beauty of the Lake District.
