Beatrix Potter in The Lake District
Beatrix Potter was a prolific writer of famous books with terrific illustrations. She first visited The Lake District as a child in 1882 which became the start of a lifelong love of the area.
Her inspiration for writing and illustrations was stirred from the beautiful scenery and her study of the local wildlife. Her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, was first published in 1902 and with the proceeds she bought Hill Top Farm. She continued to add to her purchases of land and farms as she made more from the success of her stories. Her love of the Lake District and its natural beauty inspired her in her writing and with a growing determination that the area should be preserved; she bequeathed the land to The National Trust.
Hill Top Farm, near Sawray, recently used in the film 'Miss Potter' was the inspiration of many of her books, including The Tale of Samuel Whiskers and The Tale of Tom Kitten. The Beatrix Potter Gallery, Hawkshead is a fascinating exhibition of the illustrations from her books and gives an insight into her life. Also included in the exhibition are 'behind the scenes' materials from the film. The World of Beatrix Potter attraction in Windermere is an award winning magical place that brings her stories to life. With lots to see, do and interact with, it is a great place to visit.
