Gironde OverviewWith a wonderful array of beaches from the uncluttered to the chic, lots of lovely little villages and medieval towns and some beautiful countryside, Gironde is a great place to head for. Encompassing much of the Bordeaux wine region, tour the vineyards to discover rich red vintages, enjoy great regional cooking and don't miss the oysters, they are superb.

  • Jardin des Papillons, near Arcachon- Europe's largest butterfly park, alive with the beautiful shapes and colours of thousands of butterflies
  • Les Bateliers Arcachonnais, Arcachon - boats regularly leave the Jetee Thiers for the beautiful little town of Cap Ferrat
  • Palais Gallien - a 2nd century amphitheatre located near the fabulous botanic gardens in Bordeaux
  • Bordeaux National Opera House - 12 large columns give the building a classical beauty; the interior decoration in its original colours of blue and gold
  • Collegiate Church, St. Emilion - Romanesque/Byzantine style church with beautiful 16th century stained glass and a 14th century cloister
  • Catacombs and Cave Church, St. Emilion - beneath the village the rock has been scoured out to leave a cathedral size church and catacombs
