- Kells Monastry - established by St Columba in the 6th Century and where the Book of Kells was first discovered

- Newgrange - according to Celtic lore, the legendary Kings of Tara are buried here
- Hill of Tara - the political and spiritual centre of Celtic Ireland and seat of the High Kings until the 11th century
- Clonmacnoise - a medieval monastery founded by St Ciaran where many kings of Tara and Connaught were buried
- Slieve Bloom Mountains - a low range of mountains and bogs with some lovely walks through deeply wooded glens and mountain streams
