East Coast and Midlands OverviewThe East Coast and Midlands region of Ireland is characterised by beautiful lochs and the gentle hills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, perfect for walking. Historic Kells Abbey lies central to the region whilst Drogheda on the east coast is a good base for discovering the bloody history of the Boyne Valley. Don't miss the Hill of Tara, the ancient seat of the Irish Kings.


East Coast the The Midlands Highlights

  • Boyne Valley - visit the site of the Battle of the Boyne where William of Orange conquered James II
  • Kells Monastry - established by St Columba in the 6th Century and where the Book of Kells was first discovered
  • Slane Castle - set in glorious grounds designed by Capability Brown. Damaged by fire in 1991 the house is now completely renovated
  • Newgrange - according to Celtic lore, the legendary Kings of Tara are buried here
  • Hill of Tara - the political and spiritual centre of Celtic Ireland and seat of the High Kings until the 11th century
  • Clonmacnoise - a medieval monastery founded by St Ciaran where many kings of Tara and Connaught were buried
  • Slieve Bloom Mountains - a low range of mountains and bogs with some lovely walks through deeply wooded glens and mountain streams
