Carlisle Tourist Information & Visitor Guide

carlisle-overview.jpgStanding close to the border between England and Scotland, Carlisle has long been home to armies. Founded by the Romans to serve the soldiers guarding nearby Hadrian's Wall, a massive medieval fortress was built during the reign of William II, much of which remains today. A fascinating museum in the Guildhall traces this history of this historic Lake District city.

Carlisle Highlights

  • Carlisle Cathedral - founded in 1122, by King Henry I, replacing earlier buildings on the site
  • Guildhall Museum - traces the fascinating history of the historic city of Carlisle
