Boulogne Haute Ville
The 'Haute Ville' is the old town of Boulogne, situated on the top of the hill and is enchanting with its winding cobbled streets, ramparts and chateau that date from the 13th century, the best conserved example in northern France. There are four gateways by which you can enter the old town, one on each side of the rectangular fortification.
The Chateau - as you walk through the gates of the medieval Château you will cross the narrow stone bridge, high above the moat, and before you will be the towering stone walls. This was once the stronghold of the Count of Boulogne who ruled this area in the Middle Ages. The Museum’s collections were started in 1825 and include a good example of medieval military history and works from the many painters who were inspired by the local coastline.
Cathedral of Notre-Dame - has an Italian-style dome which dominates the town. Inside, the nave is a cool quiet oasis from the bustle of the Old Town. The Legend of Notre Dame claims that a mysterious boat, pulled by a swan, carrying a luminous statue of the Virgin Mary appeared in the estuary at Boulogne and was carried to the church on the hill, and soon miracles occurred. The swan then became the emblem of the town.
The Ramparts – date from the 13th century and are the best preserved fortifications in the north of France. They are made up of seventeen turrets and four gates and have remained unchanged for centuries. From here are some fantastic views into the town and beyond to the rural areas.
The Belfry – is attached to the Town Hall and is Boulogne’s oldest building dating from the 12th century. Originally it was the keep of the old mediaeval castle before becoming a belfry in the 13th century. From here you can enjoy breathtaking views over the town, the port and the sea.
The streets of the Old Town are lively, along the rue de Lille and in Godefrey de Bouillon square, there are some interesting shops, pavement cafes, and excellent restaurants. There is so much to see and do in the Haute Ville with its charm and history it makes a great place for your short break.
