May Opening for Elizabethan Garden at Kenilworth Castle
A huge aviary will form the centrepiece of an Elizabethan garden opening at Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire on the 2nd May 2009.
This new garden is a re-creation of an original created by Robert Dudley to woo Queen Elizabeth I. The discovery of an old letter has been the key to unlocking the secrets of the lost garden. Believed to have been written by Robert Langham, the letter describes a hugely detailed and opulent garden, be-decked in diamonds, emeralds and rubies and garnished in gold.
Although Dudley failed to impress Good Queen Bess with his garden, there is no doubt that visitors this year will be! The new garden features a terrace, arbours, obelisks, hedges, fruit trees and flowers and where possible has used old species that may have been used in the 16th century when the original garden was created.
