Castle Howard Restored and Revisited
For many people Castle Howard is inextricably linked with Evelyn Waugh’s classic novel, ‘Brideshead Revisited’ when the castle was used to represent Brideshead Castle in a television production of this sad story of forbidden love and the loss of innocence set in England prior to the Second World War.
The release of a new film starring Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon has prompted Castle Howard’s owner, The Hon. Simon Howard to open a new exhibition that charts the restoration of part of the castle after it was ravaged by fire in 1940. Stretching over three once-abandoned rooms, visitors will see how they have been restored specifically to be used as film sets. It will be a chance to find out what goes on behind the scenes during filming and get a close up view of a real film set.
Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1699, Castle Howard is filled with magnificent collections gathered by successive generations of the Howard family. Set in 1000 acres of gardens, there is an aromatic Walled Garden brimming with roses and an ornamental vegetable garden. An adventure playground, boat trips on the lake and nature trails ensure a fantastic day out for all the family.
