  • Allier - the most northern of the Auvergne departments is Allier. Known for its diverse landscape - oak forest to the northeast, vineyards of Saint-Pourcinois at its centre. Moulins, seat of the Bourbon Dukes in the 10th century, is an attractive stopover for visitors as is the ever-popular spa town of Vichy
  • Cantal - the Cantal department is dominated by mountains that were originally volcanic. The highest peaks, Plomb du Cantal and the Puy Mary, are surrounded by deep valleys and pastureland used for sheep and dairy farming. In summer see the famous Salers cattle that produce the area's best-loved cheese - Cantal
  • Corrèze - offers visitors a rural retreat and the chance to enjoy some splendid, unspoilt countryside. There are over 5000 kms of rivers the Vergeze, the Correze and the Dordogne, plus over 40 lakes
  • Creuse - it was the clear waters of the Creuse that enabled Aubusson to become a centre for making coloured dyes - used for tapestries & rugs. Tapestry production was at its height in the 16th & 17th centuries. The area was also known for its skilled builders who learned their trade working the local granite. These skilled men were largely responsible for the external urbanisation of Paris
  • Haute-Loire - just about every outdoor activity is available here: walking, cycling, climbing, riding, fishing, hand-gliding, gold & even bungee-jumping. There are many Renaissance churches & Black Madonnas found throughout the area. Carved in walnut or cedar wood, the Madonnas were supposedly brought back from the Orient by the Crusaders
  • Haute-Vienne - the countryside is hilly and wooded, ideal for the famous Limousin breed of cattle. Forest, lakes and countryside continue to attract tourists to the Haute-Vienne who enjoy a range of activities including walking, fishing, sailing, boating and skiing.
  • Puy-de-Dôme - is a mix of extinct volcanoes, thick forest, rivers, lakes and mountains.The oldest geological mountain range in France and part of France's largest national park, the Parc Naturel Regional des Volcans d'Auvergne. The capital of the region is Clermont-Ferrand, a lively university town, home to the Michelin tyre and guidebook corporation
