Alnwick Castle
Alnwick Castle is situated 33 miles north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and is the second largest inhabited castle in England. Today it is the family home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland and a very popular visitor attraction. Made more popular recently as a film location for Harry Potter, Elizabeth, Becket and Blackadder.
It first appeared in history books soon after 1096 when Yves de Vescy became baron of Alnwick and erected the earliest parts of the Castle and it has had a long a colourful life. It has been at the centre of many of the country's famous historical events such as the battles between the English and the Scots and involvements in the Guy Fawkes plot. Within the castle you will find magnificent State Rooms, a fine collection of Renaissance art and beautiful trophies by Giovanni Montiroli. In the courtyard there is a life-size statue of Harry Hotspur who was immortalised by Shakespeare, he first saw battle at the age of 8 and was knighted at the age of 11.
There is a regular events programme with exciting opportunities to try archery or brass rubbing as well as historical tours of the castle and grounds. Why not have a go at sword play, at one of the Knights in Battle events. On your visit you may catch a glimpse of some Hogwarts characters or a performance of a ventriloquist or magic act. There is always something interesting to see or do but check out their calendar of events first.
The Castle won Best Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2007, the Gold Award in the national final of the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence. Another reason to make Alnwick Castle a day out to remember.
